Overview

An 8-day journey from Lhasa to Everest Base Camp takes you through lofty Tibetan monasteries, pristine lakes, glaciers, and the undulating Himalayan Range.

The Tibet Everest base camp tour offers the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get up close and personal with the highest mountains on Earth – Mount Everest (8848m). We’ll begin in Lhasa, admiring one wonder after another: the Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Drepung and Sera Monasteries. From there we’ll journey to Qomolangma base Camp, never fear – rumors of it being closed are false.

Along the way there will be stops at Yamdrok Lake, Karo La Glaciers, Khumbum Stupa in Gyantse and Tashi Lhunpo monastery in Shigatse. Both cities have their own unique customs and traditions compared to Lhasa. After ascending over 5000 metres above sea level we’ll spend a night at Everest base Camp and witness its splendid sunrise before returning to Lhasa.

Experiencing an Everest base camp trekking tour is an adventure like no other – just beware of possible weather changes that could affect peak visibility during monsoon season (July and August), though if you wake up early enough it may still be visible!

Itinerary

You can reach Lhasa by plane from several cities in mainland China, or take a train from one of seven gateway cities.

Upon arrival at the airport or railway station, you will be met by one of our guides who will help with your luggage. Driving from the airport usually takes about an hour, and crossing the Lhasa River from the station only 25 minutes.

Once you check into your hotel, it's best to spend some time resting to acclimatize to the altitude of the city.

Accommodation: Ganggyen Hotel (4Star)

Today's tour begins with a visit to the Potala Palace, which serves as the winter residence of Tibet's Dalai Lamas and has belonged to them since the 7th Century. It is home to several valuable artifacts, including the ornate burial stupas of former Dalai Lamas and the meditation Cave of their 33rd great king.

Then, you will enjoy lunch before journeying to Jokhang Temple, founded by the same king in the 7th century. Here, you can admire the statue of Buddha Sakyamuni at the age of twelve and observe pilgrims paying tribute around its exterior walls.

Barkhor Street is located nearby, offering an opportunity for kora (a religious circle made around particular structures or mountains) with locals and other believers, as well as a chance to explore its traditional marketplaces.

Accommodation: Ganggyen Hotel (4Star)

You'll be visiting Dra-dong Village - 25 kilometers southwest of Lhasa's downtown - the most picturesque village in the area. During your stay, take a look around and get a glimpse of life in rural Lhasa; don't forget to check out the 11th century Nyimatang Monastery and have lunch with a local Tibetan family.

Come afternoon, you'll be welcomed at Sera Monastery, one of Tibet's 'great three' Gelug monasteries. Take some time to observe monks debating between 3-5 pm, explore the Tibetan religious scripture printing house, as well as admire three sand Mandalas and the attractively painted Rock Painting of Buddha.

Accommodation: Ganggyen Hotel (4Star)

Take a drive from Lhasa to Shigatse by way of Gampala Pass (4790 m), offering a glimpse of Yamdrok-tso (4400m), surrounded by snow-capped mountains with a picturesque view of Holy Mount Nyenchen Khangsar (7191m). Be sure to observe Korola Glacier by the roadside and hang a prayer flag at Manak Dam Lake's Simila Mountain Pass.

We'll then arrive in Gyantse, historically Tibet's third largest city, where we can visit Pelkor Monastery and Gyantse Kumbum for an even better view of Gyangtse Fortress.

After about one and a half hours driving, we will get to Shigatse, which is the second largest city in Tibet. You can explore its traditional Barley Mill and the vast Barley Fields in summer here.

Accommodation: Gesar Hotel (Luxury Tibetan Cultural styled hotel)

In the morning, we will visit Tashilunpo Monastery, the home of Panchan Lama. After obtaining your Alien's travel permit in Shigatse, we'll head to Lhatse, a small town where you can stop for lunch.

We will then make our way through Tsola Pass (4600M), Gyatsola Pass (5248M) and Gawula Pass (5198M) as we enter Mt. Everest National Nature Reserve.

Once at Everest Base Camp (5200m), you may get closer to gaze upon the spectacular golden peak of Mt. Everest - if time and weather permits - in the evening sunset from the lodging area.

Accommodation: Tent Guesthouse

In the morning, we can get the best view of Mount Everest on the eastern slope after a pleasant night at the base camp or monastery guesthouse.

As we pack up and prepare to drive back to Shigatse, we will say goodbye to the world's highest mountain. The hill behind the monastery is the best spot for early-morning photos of the mountain.

After a journey of 342-kilometers, we can take a relaxing hot bath and a well-deserved rest once we reach Shigatse.

Accommodation: Gesar Hotel (Luxury Tibetan Cultural styled hotel)

After breakfast, the morning will be dedicated to touring the Tashilhunpo Monastery, built in 1447 by the first Dalai Lama and now home to the Panchen Lama, Tibet's second highest religious incarnation. Guests will be able to explore the tombs of seven Panchen Lamas and roam through its cobbled streets for a glimpse of monastic life.

Then we'll travel back to Lhasa via the newly created Lhasa-Shigatse highway, resulting in an approximate travel time reduction of an hour.

Upon arrival in Lhasa at late afternoon, visitors can take advantage of some last minute sightseeing on Barkhor Street, purchasing any souvenirs as desired!

Accommodation: Ganggyen Hotel (4Star)

You will be transferred to the airport or train station by the guide.
