Overview

Qinghai Lake, located in the southern region of Qinghai province’s Hainan Tibetan autonomous prefecture, is the largest saline and alkaline lake on China’s Tibetan plateau. Locally known as Tso-Ngon-po མཚོ་སྔོན་པོ། (Blue Lake) and named Kokonor by Mongolians, it covers an area of 4318 square kilometres and has a depth of 21 metres, with an altitude of 3200 metres above sea level. Five native fish species flourish in its waters: Naked Carp, Stoneloaches, Trplophysa Stolikai, T. Dorsonotata, T. Scleroptera and t. Siluroides; Yellow River fish can also be found here.
