Overview

Qinghai Lake, located in the southern region of Qinghai province’s Hainan Tibetan autonomous prefecture, is the largest saline and alkaline lake on China’s Tibetan plateau. Locally known as Tso-Ngon-po མཚོ་སྔོན་པོ། (Blue Lake) and named Kokonor by Mongolians, it covers an area of 4318 square kilometres and has a depth of 21 metres, with an altitude of 3200 metres above sea level. Five native fish species flourish in its waters: Naked Carp, Stoneloaches, Trplophysa Stolikai, T. Dorsonotata, T. Scleroptera and t. Siluroides; Yellow River fish can also be found here.

Itinerary

Your driver and vehicle will come to pick you up from your hotel at 9:00am. Travel 153km to Qinghai Lake, otherwise known as Tso-Ngonpo and Kokonor. Along the way, be sure to admire the enchanting views of Sun & Moon mountain pass (3800m). Arrive at the largest salt-water lake in the area (surface 3200m) and witness its sacred and historical sites.

Get a chance to take excellent panoramic photos from a nearby local Tibetan viewpoint. If desired, ride a horse or yak (own expense) for an authentic Tibetan experience around the tranquil shore that is dotted with Tibetan festival nomadic family tents on the highlands of the Tibetan Plateau.

If interested, there is also an opportunity to hike up to Shala-Pass 3800m (own expense) which should take 1-2 hours while allowing you time to savour incredible panoramas of Qinghai Lake. Once lunch has been enjoyed at a picnic area by the lake, proceed with learning about life in Tibet through conversations with local Tibetan nomads for an immersive experience. Come evening, drive back to your hotel where tour will end upon arrival.
